Giving to Missions

Since the earliest days of missions the local church has been supporting missionaries.

The church at Philipi supported the Apostle Paul in his missionary endeavors.

Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. - Philippians 4:15-18

The Apostle Paul appealed to the church in Rome to support his missionary endeavors into Spain.

Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first I be somewhat filled with your company. - Romans 15:24

The biblical pattern for missionaries is to receive their financial support from preaching the gospel.

Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. - 1 Corinthians 9:14

Believers who support missions become co-laborers of the ministry and partakers in the eternal reward of the ministry.

Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. - Matthew 10:41-42

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. - Matthew 6:19-20
